Gracie Barra Kids

Unlock Your Child’s Full Potential Through Martial Arts

Many parents in the current digital era are concerned about their kids’ excessive screen time, lack of physical activity, or confidence issues. Our martial arts classes for kids provide an effective and comprehensive solution.

At Gracie Barra Singapore, we empower kids with Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ), a martial art that keeps youngsters cognitively and physically active while teaching them discipline, respect, and resilience.

With a culture based on community, respect, and personal development, Gracie Barra Singapore’s unique philosophy guarantees that every child learns in a nurturing, orderly, and supportive setting. Our kids BJJ classes are more than just training – it’s a life-changing experience.

Discover how our Martial Arts for Kids programme can transform your child’s life.

Why Choose Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for Your Child?

Unlike striking martial arts, BJJ focuses on grappling, control, and ground-based techniques — making it safer and highly effective for children.

Here’s why we encourage the learning of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu for kids in Singapore

  • Non-striking nature: Less risk of injury, perfect for younger students.
  • Problem-solving mindset: BJJ is often described as “physical chess,” developing strategic thinking and patience.
  • Confidence-building: Kids learn how to handle challenges calmly and constructively.

Whether you’re looking for an activity that teaches self defence for kids or an activity that nurtures discipline and focus, BJJ is a powerful and enriching choice.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

At what age can my child start BJJ?

Children as young as two and a half years can begin learning BJJ in our age-appropriate kids programme. While our toddlers class is only once a week at the moment, it is designed to be small, with more attention given to each child by an instructor who is trained in early childhood education. Children from this class are usually only in it for about 6 months before they join the regular kids BJJ class, even if they are younger than 4 years old.

Yes! BJJ is a non-striking, controlled martial art that prioritises safety, especially for children.

A BJJ uniform can be rented for $15 if your child does not already own one. Comfortable athletic wear should be worn underneath the uniform such as a sports shirt and shorts/rights. Your child will need a Gracie Barra uniform (Gi) once they join.

We recommend at least 2-3 sessions per week for steady progress and skill development, especially in the beginning of their BJJ journey.

We have four different classes for kids:

  • Toddlers BJJ class: Kids aged 2.5 to 4 years
  • Kids BJJ class: Kids 4 to 12 years
  • BJJ for Teens class: Kids 10 to 14 years
  • Advanced Kids BJJ class: This is for kids who have more experience in BJJ or are looking to compete in the near future.
  • Within our Kids BJJ class, the children will all do the warm ups together before being split into two groups: beginners, and kids with more experience. Within these groups, the students will be paired with those who are close to their age, size and experience level.

BJJ builds confidence, self-defence skills, and body awareness — empowering girls in and out of class. For girls who are transitioning from the kids class to the adults class, we welcome them to join in the Women’s Only BJJ class which is a class for females from the ages 9 and up, and taught by an all-female instructor team.

At Gracie Barra Singapore, kids will gain the confidence to handle bullying situations calmly and assertively — often without physical confrontation.

Yes, we offer a tailored programme for teens that combines a more independent approach to BJJ with positive mentorship. This teaches our students to think for themselves more, while still receiving guidance whenever necessary.
