CloseThe Copa da Malasia BJJ tournament in Kuala Lumpur over the weekend has got to be one of the most memorable competitions for the Gracie Barra Singapore family. Some will remember it as their first Jiu-Jitsu tournament or their first ever GBSG overseas trip. But for many, this will always be remembered as the time our team was stuck on a bus to KL for about 10 hours just waiting to get through immigration, only to arrive at the hotel at 2am in the morning.
Despite being sleep deprived and exhausted, we are proud to say that the GBSG family stepped up their game and performed exceptionally well as a team across the gi and no gi categories. Once in KL, our GB brothers and sisters from Indonesia came together with us to bring back a whopping total of 8 Gold, 9 Silver and 8 Bronze medals, earning us third place in the overall team category.
We are extremely proud of many of our new white belt members as they stepped out onto the competition mats for the first time and taking on their opponents with courage and tenacity. Many of our more seasoned competitors also showed a huge improvement in their Jiu-Jitsu game as well! On top of all that, we’d also like to make a big shout out to the GB Kids for fighting their hearts out in the Rock and Rumble category!
At the end of the first night of the tournament, Professor Bruno gave a very well-deserved promotion. After beating all 4 of his opponents in under 2 minutes each, Dion earned his blue belt while standing at the top of the podium! Congratulations Dion!
Thank you all our Gracie Barra Professors and Coaches for all their hard work preparing the team for the tournament, and to the GBSG supporters (Moms, Dads, Grandparents, Wives and Husbands, Friends) who made their way up to KL to cheer us on. Thank you also to our teammates both at the tournament and to those who stayed behind, thank you for pushing us to be the best we can be! We look forward to our next BJJ challenge!
